Radiant heating

If you are building a new home, or having the floor replaced in your existing home, it’s a great opportunity to install an energy efficient radiant floor heating system in your home. A radiant floor heating system involves installing a heat mechanism in the floor. This heat then rises to heat the space above.

Installing radiant floor heating can make your home much more energy efficient and comfortable.

In conventional forced air or convection heating systems, heat is not distributed effectively in rooms, because the hot air rises to the ceiling, making the top of the room much warmer than the lower part, where it is needed. Radiant floor heating dramatically reduces this temperature differential, enabling you to set the thermostat lower than you normally have it set. According to the American Society of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, with a radiant floor heating system installed, people can typically turn the thermostat down 6 to 8 degrees from the level they would otherwise have it at without feeling any discomfort. That amounts to huge energy savings over time, especially if you live in a region with long, cold winters.

Another benefit of radiant heating is that it doesn’t dry out the air the way conventional heating does, so humidifiers are not required. This means that using radiant heat can reduce electricity and water use.

Installing radiant heating makes the most sense if you are building a new home or renovating an existing one. In addition to the energy savings, people who have poor circulation and often get cold feet will appreciate radiant floor heating even more. Yet another advantage of radiant heating is that it doesn’t kick up dust and allergens the way conventional heating systems do.
